Photo: Sun towering over Achasan MountainGreat news for those who have yet to decide where to go and say hello to the New Year’s sun – Seoul Metropolitan City has announced the top 21 parks and mountains to watch the sunrise within or nearby Seoul!
Namsan Mountain and Inwangsan Mountain have made the list as they are easily accessible from Seoul since they are located within the city. Mountains found just around the city include Eungbongsan Mountain, Baebongsan Mountain, Gaeunsan Mountain, Ansan Mountain, Yongwangsan Mountain and Gaehwasan Mountain. Other mountains, such as Achasan Mountain, Yongmasan Mountain, Bukhansan Mountain, Dobongsan Mountain, Buramsan Mountain, Bongsan Mountain, Maebongsan Mountain, Hoamsan Mountain, Umyeonsan Mountain, Daemosan Mountain and Iljasan Mountain are located right outside of Seoul. Haneul Park and Olympic Park were selected as the best parks to view sunrise in Seoul.
In addition, many sunrise viewing spots will be holding festivals and events with activities such as samulnori (traditional percussion quartet), flying wish balloons and kites, sharing tteokguk (rice cake soup) and more to celebrate the upcoming New Year. Known to be especially popular among international visitors, Namsan Octagonal Pavilion will present choir performances and hold wish writing events while Inwangsan Mountain Cheongun Park is in preparation for the annual Sunrise Festival that offers various activities such as pungmul (folk music) performance, New Year’s wish event and more!
According to the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute, the expected time of sunrise of the New Year in Seoul is estimated to be at 7:47 am.
